We have just purchased an AppleTV and are trying to set up the AirPlay with our iPad2. I have connected the HomeShare on our MacBookPro. Even if I have the laptop shut down it seems the only unit the AppleTV is connecting to is the laptop.

I have turned AirPlay 'ON' on the AppleTV
I have made sure everything is connected to the right wifi
Our wifi router is an Airport Extreme
Our iPad2 has IOS 6 on it
The AppleTV is connected to a Sony bdv-hz970w receiver

The iPad will share/show what is on the computer but will not mirror on the TV.

Any help in getting this mirrored correctly greatly appreciated.

Did you actually turn on mirroring? Double tap the home button, then swipe twice to the left (which is actually a left to right motion) brings up the airplay mirroring "button". You should see the AppleTV under this and the option to turn on Mirroring....

Solved :)

Thank you very much! None of the articles I read mentioned swiping the opposite direction so I couldn't find the mirroring option. I have never gone in that direction.

We may actually keep it after all :D
