I've seen some posts on here about how slow appleworks is and how it freezes and crashes.
After months of frustration with this problem, I finally figured it out. Go to the "documents" directory, then to "appleworks user data" then "starting points" then delete the folder called "recent items." it's a cache overload problem. the cache fills back up eventually, but you can delete the folder again whenever appleworks slows down.
