when opening older appleworks files, i am unable to save them. when you close them without saving, you even do not get a screen asking you to save or not. after opening and subsequently closing a file and then reopening it again, there is no problem anymore!

Unfortunately, it's unlikely. Although there is quite a bit of speculation that iWork will (eventually) evolve into a good Office alternative.

AppleWorks 6 works just fine here with none of the problems that you report.
