Application downloaded from internet Won't open

I downloaded the application Pencil which is a free animation software today. I unzipped it and tried to open it but it just expanded the dock slightly then closed. I have had this happen before and I have also had applications bounce endlessly in the doc. Is there a way to fix this?

run Console.app in your Applications/Utilities folder and see if it gives any type of error message when it fails to start.
