Pulling my hair out at this point...

Folders and files do not sort alphabetically in my application folder (they do in other finder windows).
I have it viewing options at 'sort by name' and as list NOT as 'group by name' and still the folder shows the folders on top and not in alphabetical order.

Not sure what else to do... running Monterey 12.5
 
Folders on top is a global setting in Finder advanced preferences.

Individual folder settings can be shown using cmd-j. Here is /Applications:

The unchecking of keep folders on top in windows when sorting by name did the trick!
Totally missed that one...
