In my Mac's Application folder, I like to sort my files by kind. Whenever I do this, it only stays this way until I log out and back in again. What could be the cause of this, and how can I solve it?

Are you right clicking and choosing Sort By from the contextual menu? If so, that's why it's not maintaining your settings. That is intended to function as a temporary change to the window when you want it to change back to what you had it set to before.

Instead, choose Show View Options. The changes you make there will stick until you decide to do something else using SVO.

No, I mean by right clicking in the Window. But, CMD+J does the same thing. It should be holding the settings from there.

I was going to suggest trashing the Finder plist file, which still might be a viable choice. But, when I looked for mine, I had 25 of them! Of those, 24 had an appended six-character suffix of random letters and numbers. I moved them all into an isolated folder outside of ~/Library/Preferences to see if Finder's behavior would be affected.

How often do you Restart? (Is that what you mean by "log back in"?)
