I was wondering what application people would suggest for testing wireless security, and I was also curious if the built in airport in modern mbp's will work with them.

Kismac works wonders at sniffing and capturing packets. However, you can't passively capture the packets with the built in wifi chips. I happened to have a few USB wifi sticks lying around and one of the old Belkin ones was a supported chipset.

I capture with Kismac using the belkin usb stick, and have aircrack running to crack the wep key. It works well.

I think you can capture them with the built in wifi, but it installs a new driver for the chip so that if you are going to be using the internet you will have to restart for the original apple driver to be reinstated.
