Application full screen, mail notification, stuck split screen

So...I run an application full screen. It's a HVD viewer for work, allowing me to use a hosted virtual desktop.
I'm working along and get a notification on the top right for the Mac mail application. I click it and it opens the mail message on the right and the HVD viewer on the left.
In most cases I want to just glance at the message and go on with my life. Unfortunately I can't see a way to do that. I'm stuck with replying, forwarding, deleting the message. There is no "close" option that I can see.
Am I missing something?
