Applications not responding

I have an aluminum iMac and since yesterday nothing is responding. Everything just hops up and then it says when i hold it that its not responding. the only thing that opens is firefox since i haven't closed it since then and AIM since it opens when I turn my computer on. I've tried opening activity monitor and it won't open either. Does anyone know what the problem is?
