Applications Opening in Background

I don't know what happened, but my Mac has recently started opening applications in the background instead of the foreground. It's annoying, and I can't find any options in the preferences to change it back.

I read in one thread to go to the system preferences plist and change the "ShowAllMode" to NO--but mine was already set at no. I've tried changing it to yes, and back to no, but that didn't help.

Any ideas?
