Applying a Grain texture in Illustrator to a Gradient.

I have followed this tutorial http://www.layersmagazine.com/brushed-metal-effect-in-adobe-illustrator.html however when it comes to applying the grain I do not have the texture option there. Everything is not available to click. I can apply SVG filters though, however there is not a grain there.
