Silly question... when you get a new phone fresh out the box before applying a new protector do you all alcohol wipe the screen or just do the tape thing before you apply the screen protector?

If you're just taking off the protective plastic from a new iPhone, I would just do the tape thing. Alcohol is bad for the oleophobic coating, so if you decide to go without a screen protector one day, you'll have a fresh new coating still!

I always use the wipes, I'd rather ensure the screen is properly cleaned before I apply the protector. Nothing worse than a smudge or even debris under the protector.

So just tape ?

It would take hundreds, if not thousands of wipes with alcohol until you start removing the oleophobic coating. A few wipes before applying a screen protector won't do any harm at all.

It's also possible to manually add that coating later on, I recently did that to the glass back because for some reason it had some spots without coating.

I had also heard that it's best to apply the screen protector in the bathroom after the shower has been run. The steam makes the dust in the air settle.

Personally, I never install my own, when I use them, as I don't trust my install skills.

I stopped trying to apply my own screen protectors a while ago, the kiosk I normally take my phones to does an impeccable job of applying them - I could never match that, and it's not that much more expensive than DIY'ing. I've tried more than a few times to apply my own but I can never get them to go on perfectly straight which drives me nuts after a few minutes of looking at it.

But I do see them use both alcohol (sprayed on) and the tape prior to applying the protectors. You can also lift up the protector (easier if it's glass) and hit the sticky side of it with the tape if it's picked up any dust on the way down - doesn't seem to effect it's 'stickiness' at all.

I just bought these when they were on sale for $6.99. Not sure how much people are paying for the screen protector and installation, but for under $10 I can get 3-4 screen protectors. They come with the installation tray so it's almost impossible to mess up the alignment.

Oh a tray to apply it sounds good, I might actually give that a try I think - cheers for the tip off!

I normally pay around $20 for a glass protector + installation, if I got the same thing done at Apple with their Belkin protectors I think its closer to $40-50 (Australian Dollars).

It’s so crazy round here how some people think a few swipes with an alcohol wipe will completely remove the coating.

A simple answer to your question, yes, wipe it down before applying the screen protector. No, doing once won't damage the oleophobic coating.
And if any of you are interested here's a quick video to help you out with the application, so that you never mess it up ever again.
