When I restart my 2012 MacBook Pro I find various apps open automatically, which I have to then close down. These include Calendar, iMessages, Mail, iTunes and Spotify. They all try to open at once, causing me to wait before I can use my macbook.

Is there a way of preventing these from opening automatically?

Option-click (or right-click or 2-finger click depending on your input device) on the app icon in the dock, go to options then uncheck "Open at Login".

Or: System Prefs > Users Groups > Login Items. Delete accordingly.

Or: Uncheck when you logout/shutdown/reset, "Reopen windows when logging back in"

Thanks. With the exception of the spotify app, none of the others are set to 'open at log in', yet they all open when turning on or restarting my macbook.

NoBoMac gave you the answer:
Uncheck when you logout/shutdown/reset, "Reopen windows when logging back in"

go to restart, and in the popup window...as suggested...

One other thing to check, that just popped to mind:

Settings > General, and make sure "Close windows when quitting an application" is checked.
