Apps crashing on launch

Several applications - notably all MS office apps and my Remote Desktop Client (also a MS app) suddenly started exiting (crashing?) on open. Other apps seem ok (I've randomly tried several). Previously everything worked fine. The apps bounce up & down once in the dock, then go quiet & are no longer running. No error messages that I can see. I'm running on a MacBook w/ 10.4.10 & all up to date.

I've no idea what's happening.

Help!

btw, I've tried repairing permissions, so it's not that.
