I have a meditation app and a pomodoro app, both of which do not play sounds. I've played around with the settings but can't make it work. What could I be doing wrong??

First quick fix: Confirm the silent switch (above) is not activated.
Second: Confirm, in settings, the MUTE and SOUND toggle is correct.

Thanks, braddick. The device as a whole is definitely not on mute because I'm playing one of my other meditation apps (and adjusting the volume) without any problems.

I wouldn't take that to necessarily mean you're not on mute. In my week's experience of the iPad it seems that some will only be muted by putting the iPad on mute and others will only bemused by turning the volume right down.

If you double-click the home button and then swipe the bar at the bottom to the right then you can tap on the speaker icon to toggle mute.
