I've owned an Apple Powerbook for nearly a year and never suffered a serious error with it, however tonight seems to be the night for errors; my applications refuse to show up in the Finder unless I click on them in Dock and ask to 'View in Finder' and then the application shows up in the [otherwise empty] Applications folder just as it should. When I close the finder and re-open it, the application has vanished again. All the applications seems to be in place where they should be (everything is working as it should) they just won't show up.

Since I've been putting it off for a while, I saw this as good motivation to start backing up all my files (such a boring task!) in preparation for an OS reinstall .. but when I try and copy files across to disk, I get errors telling me that 'some files cannot be moved' and, on occasion, 'You do not have sufficient privileges'. The most common error code that crops up is "Error -51", Googling for that error message (and variations of) didn't yield anything useful.

The only thing I've done tonight that could have affected the machine was run 'Repair Permissions' - though that shouldn't have harmed it! I have a log from the repair, so I can see what files were modified but this problem has me completely stumped. Can anyone help, or has anyone with a Mac had this problem themselves? Any help is appreciated!

(Edited to add: I'm running 10.2.8).
