Hi all,

I've got all my apps set to check for updates and auto-update. Today I noticed that NONE of them are doing so?

I opened Al Dente, alttab, betterdisplay. Pressed Check for Updates myself and noticed that all of them had updates and I was 3-4 releases behind?

Any idea how this happens on all of these? If it was one, then it's down to the app, but it's happening for all of them?

Automatic updates on macOS do not necessarily mean the app will update immediately once a new version is available. The timing of updates depends on various factors determined by the OS. It is strange if you are 3-4 releases behind, and it may be some kind of bug. Nevertheless, try turning auto-update on and off and restart your Mac.

You may want to check out Macupdater. I got that recommendation on here in one of the threads some time ago, it's great. Handles any scenario of update needed, from my experience. It will check and make sure you know about needed updates, then do them automatically.

Note that the autoupdate apps setting in System Settings > General > Software Update > Auto Updates "i" button is only for App Store apps.

None of these are App Store apps, so any autoupdate depends on settings within each app.

BetterDisplay. Its update settings are, if enabled, to check and notify - not autoupdate. I had version 3.0.5 and MacUpdater tells me 3.1.2 is ready (a day ago). I don't suppose the auto check runs every day I am guessing the your BetterDispaly has not got round to notifying you yet - if it were more than a week overdue I would be more concerned. There were 2 intermediate releases between 3.0.5 and 3.1.2: 3.1.0 a prerelease (so only for testers) and 3.1.1 only 3 days ago. So I don't think that BetterDisplay has missed anything in its weekly? checks. A manual check within the app settings does find the update.

Al Dente. I think this also an auto-check not auto-update. The latest 1.28 is only a few days old.

AltTab, according to its web site, can configured to autoupdate as well as autocheck - "periodically" it says. You might want to double check those settings.

Personally I turn off auto checking and auto updating in all apps and like @donawalt run MacUpdater. I run it once a week and pick up 20 or more non App Store updates for the past week (including BetterDisplay and Al Dente). It also picks up App Store updates days before the App Store app.

I'm aware the auto updates is only for app store apps. What I meant is that all my non app store apps are set to check and install updates automatically but very very rarely do.

If it's weekly and there's been a couple of hotfixes within a week then you might be right

That's on the auto update implementation in each app, then. You can check in with the app maker and see what their "policy" is. (I know at least the BetterDisplay guy is responsive on GitHub.) I imagine in many cases they will not push an auto update for a period of time after a new release to make sure that things are "stable" and there are no reported issues that are unsolved.

My "solution" is similar to others, I turn off the app's built-in auto update, and I use Homebrew (casks) to keep installed apps up-to-date.
