Apps opening uninvited.

A friend presented me with this problem:
On starting up her Macbook Air (Yosemite) the Microsoft Office suite opens itself. It is not a Login item. Does anyone know how to prevent this? It seems to be a similar problem that some people have with Mail opening uninvited.

If it was opened when you logged off or restarted it will start again when you log in.

It could also be set through the Dock icon to start at login. Right-click the dock icon, go to Options then make sure "Open at Login" is not checked.
