Apps Running

Is there a way to tell if an app is running in the background on a 4s?
Since the software update to 6 something is running my battery down.

Just did that, and all it did was put the icons in a single line across the bottom of the screen.

Those are all your open apps.

Hold one and press the minus in the corner to force close it.
