iPhone AppStore app icon badge does NOT updates itself... until you launched the app

AppStore app icon badge does NOT shows when updates are available.
But if AppStore app is manually opened, the fresh new available updates are there.

iphone 6, ios 8.1.2
relevant settings :
- settings | notifications | app store | allow ON; badge app icon ON; ..
not relevant settings:
- settings | itunes & appstore | automatic downloads OFF

is this a (known) bug?
or do i miss some other (relevant) settings?

This is happening on my iPhone 6 as well with 8.1.2.

Same here, iOS 8.1.2 on both my iPhone 5C and Air 2.

It probably just depends on when the app performs a background update. I've had it show up a badge when there is an update without opening the app before. it doesn't happen instantly.

I have also had it show me a number and that number is seldom correct until I go into Updates in the App Store .....

i'm quite sure it doesn't depend on 'Background App Refresh' to be ON because for me it was working fine with an old iphone 4 with ios 7.1.2 and i always keep the 'Background App Refresh' setting OFF

i hope this is a known bug and not a "feature" of ios 8.* which "needs" that setting to be ON

Maybe it was a bug in iOS 7, and now background app refresh is behaving as it should.

App store badge has always been screwed up if you update with iTunes, still is with IOS8

Update all apps on iTunes, sync to the device and a week later the badge will still be there saying apps need updated from before.

Even though it's a bug, I kind of like to know when updates have been done, as I always like to read the changelogs. Unless it's Facebook/Messenger, in which case the badge is simply there as a reminder for me to leave another 1-star review.
