Try AppTrap or AppCleaner, the same function and free. Since App Zapper haven't updated for a long time.

Even though it hasn't been updated in a while, it does work quite well. Drag and drop to uninstall an app. It clears all the preference files and other stuff.

Is there a *free* application that does what AppZapper does, which has been approved by Apple (or is established and known to be safe)?

It is free and safe, but it is also time consuming. I have used AppTrap for 2 years, no problem here.
