hello.

I have an old mac server that has about 4TB of data that I want to archive. I would like to compress the data and move it to an external 4TB HD. What is the best way of doing this?

My specific questions are:
- what compression utility? I'm thinking rzip or gzip.
- do I compress at the top/root directory or does it make more sense to compress share points/volumes and then compress those results again? The compressed data has no foreseen need to be accessed, so it will likely sit dormant if that matters.
- how do I check after the compression? Do I have to unzip everything and open up a few files (if so, does this mean I need another 4TB of space to unzip to?) or is there another way to make sure I can restore from the compression?

Your answers are appreciated.
Thank you.
