Archive Utility failing

I am trying to use the built in Archive Utility which is called 'compress' and is the same as zip. any ideas on why this would not work?

I get:
"an error occurred with compressing this file"

im trying to compress a file. i previously downloaded stuffit expander, not realizing that leopard has this built in.

Well obviously you are compressing a file. But what kind of file.
