hello

I have been using Apple Mail for quite some time now, through several upgrades, etc. However, after 5 years, even with extensive pruning of the all the mailboxes, there is just way too much email in this thing.

The problem is that I have to keep all my emails, primarily for work-related purposes and can't just delete them. There are also times when I actually do need to refer to an email in 2004 or something for a current project.

So I have a few questions:

1. What would be the safest way to archive most of my email messages so I can get them out of Mail and still be able to open them or refer to them without losing the important date/time/subject info?

2. My PowerBook G4 is 5 years old and I'm going to upgrade to a new machine in the next few weeks. What is the best and safest way to take what I DO want to keep in Apple Mail (preferences, rules, etc) into the new Leopard-based machine?
