Hi, Guys/Gals

I use apple mail and currently have 29,000 e-mails in there, the problem is I need to access them all the time so deleting is not an option. my mail app is extremely slow, is there a way to speed up the performance of this app.

Thanks in advance...:D

Just wanted to chime in and say that the tutorial swiftaw linked to works really, really well. I don't have quite 29,000 emails, but I have a fair share and noticed a big speed boost after optimizing the Envelope index. Great tip!

I'm kind of new to the Mail experience. What exactly is "archiving?" Thanks.

The thread title was misleading. The OP was really looking for a way for speeding up mail when you have a large number of messages.

Archiving is another word for backing-up. Usually it means transferring some of your old messages to offline storage to free up some space.
