I am noticing that my iPhoto library is now taking up 105 GB on my 320 GB internal hard drive and I am wanting to reduce its size. I would wager that a lot of the size is being taken up by HD videos I've taken with my digital camera, as the library itself only has 3,410 items.
I basically don't want to delete anything permanently, but I want to trim what I keep on the computer. I first thought that I could archive the entire iPhoto library which would free me up to delete at will, but I realized that if I ever wanted to access the "complete" library I archived it would force me to replace my current iPhoto library (I ran into that once before, where it doesn't seem to be able to handle importing more than one library at a time), and even if I could merge them at some point I would end up with duplicates.
Is there a way to archive items I don't need on the computer but would want to be able to peruse later if needed? I thought I could make an album of the ones I want to archive to export to an external drive but then I'd have to go back and find those same pictures in the library since deleting from an album doesn't delete from the library. One more question: my videos are scattered among the thousands of photos and I can't find a way to use the search or view functions to show only the videos.
These seem like such elementary question. I used to feel like a pretty advanced user, maybe it's age or Apple's software design . . .
I am using iPhoto '09.
