My mate has a MacBook Pro 15" that uses the first gen 'L' shaped MagSafe, which looks the same as my one for my late 2011 13" MB Pro. My battery was about to go, and he whacked his MagSafe into mine. Are they compatible?
 
Yeah, I think as long as the wattage is equal or higher to what your MBP takes, it'll be fine. At least that's my understanding.

The Thunderbolt Display from Apple includes an 85W power adapter and works with all MacBook models. :)

If the wattage is lower, it'll still work. The charging will just be slower.
