Are AMD MBP's from 2011 destined to fail?

Recently came across this article:

I had full intentions of upgrading my machine to an SSD and more RAM but I'm not sure it's worth it with this supposed track record. I thankfully haven't had any issues yet but my warranty is up next month. Anyone else have any experience with these models and their longevity?

Mine failed a couple of weeks ago.

It's a costly logic board replacement, but my AASP (Apple Stores don't exist in my country) said that it's going to take a hell of a long time to look for a logic board with a 2.3GHz i7 (mine was an early-2011 2.3GHz model - the stock high end was 2.2GHz)
