I’m just waiting for my Apple TV to arrive and am already anticipating downloading many apps but it occurred to me; are apps on the Apple TV 4K rendered in 4K? Is it the case that some developers have updated their apps with 4K assets and some haven’t?

By and large yes, although many apps are still streaming video which is a very long way from 4K. Plenty of thumbnails are sub 4K though. Actually plenty of thumbnails look like they belong on a DVD menu screen.
