Are both speakers supposed to work?

When playing music or videos on my iPhone 3G, if I put my finger over the left speaker opening, I hear nothing coming out of the right speaker. Can someone else try this... is it normal?

One is a Speaker, the other is a Mic. Mono only when using the speaker.

I think one is a speaker and the other is a Video Recorder/Extra Battery/Multimedia Text Messaging/Screen de-yellowing/Microphone/ type function. But I'm not sure because I've never read the manual or searched this site to see if anyone else has had this problem.
