Are Buildings in Apple Maps New?

I just now noticed there are 3D buildings in maps standard view. You need to really zoom in to see them. Are these new?

Well, they just disappeared. I guess it depends on where you're driving.

Outside of the major downtown area, my town evidently has no buildings. Even the local shopping mall is just a big yellow nothingness.

Yes, the buildings are only in selected large areas.
