Are i5 and i7 logic boards in the 27" imacs the same? i know that the i5 uses the 661-5429 p/n and the i7 the 661-5428 p/n but are they interchangeable?

Do they have the same sockets?

Thanks.

They have the same sockets, Socket LGA1156. There are people who have swapped from i5 to i7 processors in the 2009 iMac 27".

AFAIK the boards are the same otherwise.

Great thanks!

The reason i ask is that i have an i7 machine which has a broken board and i can get an i5 board for about $400, the i7 boards are twice as much.

I will try it and report back.

Cheers.

Definitely report back, please.

I am planning to do the i3 to i7 swap when my machine comes out of AppleCare.

Keep in mind you will be voiding any warranty on the new board by removing the CPU from the socket. Might want to boot it up with the i5 CPU in first to make sure you don't get a DOA board you cannot replace.

The board I'm thinking of buying comes with out a CPU.
Its also only warranted for 30 days, its seller refurbished.

The seller has assured me that the boards are identical, the only difference being the CPU that they are originally shipped with.

I will update how i get on.
