Are iPhone gps's supposed to work w/o wifi and does wifi supposed to stay on whileloc

Like is the gps suppose to work on the road ? Sorry I am still new to iPhones and is my iPhone 3G supposed to turn off wifi when it is locked (lockscreen) is the iPad and iPhone 4 and other iPod touches like that too? What can I do to leave my wifi on while it is locked? Thanks

The GPS works just as long as the iPhone isn't in Airplane Mode. The WiFi does not stay on when the screen is off. The only way to keep the WiFi on is to plug the iDevice in or make the screen never turn off.
