Are iPhones bought via apple always unlocked??

Sorry for sounding like a total newbie! I'm in the middle of my contract with Vodafone and I'm going to buy the new iPhone direct from apple. When you order does it ask about your current carrier or do they just ship unlocked regardless? I get the feeling I'll have the new phone and will have to then queue at a Vodafone shop for a nano sim.

No, they'll ask about all the carrier info during the ordering process.
