I have been using a pair of Dell (P2418D) for a few years now and I have just upgraded to an M1 MBA and I’m trying to decide which route to go:
  • Leverage a dock that supports DisplayLink to continue using both monitors. Not sure how smooth this will be. And if it were to be fine, I would consider upgrading to a better dual setup (2x4K).
  • Replace my dual setup with one ultrawide monitor. I’d like it to be at least 5K2K and I’m looking at options like the LG 34BK94U or Dell U4021QW, but I keep reading threads about people having lots of issues and having to resort to things like SwitchResX or BetterDummy to take advantage of the full display. Most of these threads started two years ago. Is this still a common problem I should expect to have if I go the ultrawide route?

I'm using a Samsung G9 (49" 5120x1440) with my various Macs and USBC to DP works just fine with driving full resolution. There's some issues with text clarity which I tend to think is related to low PPI on the G9.

I personally won't go back to 2 panels but would consider 4k or higher because it helps with the text clarity (higher PPI). The add'l contiguous screen space is really helpful for work and gaming is great with it as well (typical projection issues aside).
