If I ordered a new iPad 3 here in the UK is it sent direct from China, or from a warehouse somewhere in Britain/Ireland?

Mine originated from China (sheng zen [did i spell that right?] I believe). Most likely it'll be sent from China.

Yes. Apple warehouses iPads in China. All shipments originate there.

When I ordered my iPhone 4S, it was shipped from Shenzen to Hong Kong to Anchorage (where I live) to Louisville then back to Anchorage. Apparently all import shipments have to clear customs in Louisville before hitting their final deatination.

according to FedEx website my iPad is in Memphis, TN right now, says "Package available for clearance". whatever that means...

Logistically it come from the closest point or warehouse were it is available. Every configuration might not be available from US locations like PA. If not there's China.

My iPhone was shipped UPS, not FedEx, so that would be why your iPad is going through Memphis (FedEx main hub) instead of Louisville (UPS main hub). "Package available for clearance" means it's ready to go through the Customs check.

A quick update to this.

I ordered a new iPad from the UK Apple online store on 24th April, and it's due to be delivered next Tuesday.

It hasn't been sent from China, or if it has I've not been given the tracking info. All I have is notification from UPS that it's entered the system at Tamworth.

Also, for what it's worth, it's a DM serial number. The two I bought and returned from John Lewis and an Apple store were DL serials. I'm quite pleased about this because I hear good things about DM models :)

For my launch date iPad, FedEx Tracking originated from Ontario, California. So I guess we can assume that Apple stockpiled iPads weeks ahead of the launch date. Not sure about shipments after that date.

If there is an apple retail store in your vicinity there is a chance they'll just ship it from there.
