Don’t have an AppleTV 4K yet but am in the market for one. Debating whether getting the first gen 4K version or maybe the newer 4K version.

My question here is I’m wanting to watch videos late at night without interrupting my wife so wireless earphones would be awesome, but I refuse to buy AirPods so am hoping wireless earphones would work.

Yes you can use any bluetooth headphone with an Apple TV.

True, but the experience will not be as good.

1. No automatic pairing.
2. No automatic pausing as when you remove the AirPods Max
3. No battery life display on the Apple TV
4. Volume control is not as seemless

etc.

It’s funny how I automatically assumed that knowing it’s Apple.

It’s kinda like having a hot super model Girlfriend; already assumed and expected. Thank you!

Edit: Can it support more than 1 Bluetooth earphones set considering both wouldn’t be AirPods?

Haven't tried multiple simultaneous bluetooth headphones myself.

Note that the features I mentioned are ones I tested on AirPods Max. Results may vary with other Apple/Beats headphones.

Last time I connected my AirPod Pros to my ATV 4K, there was significant lip sync issues. The tvOS version was probably 14.xx or very early 15. Has that been fixed?

I’d love to know this too.

Was ready to buy an Apple TV 4K today BUT will be waiting a month or two after the upcoming Apple Keynote events.

I use both my Sony XM1004 and Beats BFP with absolutely no issues on both my Apple TV original HD and 1st Gen 4K, you should not have any issues. Don't know why you are ANTI apple AirPods, but I found them uncomfortable and the Beats a nice fit, great sound (Dolby ATMOS supported) and the same H1 chip so auto connection supported. Give them a look.

2. No automatic pausing as when you remove the AirPods Max

If the bluetooth headphones support auto pausing, then it will work just fine with Apple TV. I tried with some Pixel Buds just now and it pauses the content just fine when pulling one earbud out.

4. Volume control is not as seemless
I'm confused by what you mean. Volume control is the same with my airpods as with any other bluetooth headphones. The Siri Remote controls both just the same.

As far as headsets/earbuds go, I've only used my Amazon Echo Buds 2nd gen with my ATV 4K 1st gen, and they work very well, and even produce the spatial 3-D audio. I haven't tested my new Powerbeats Pro yet, but I assume they will work too. I rarely use earbuds with the ATV 4K though since I live alone and therefore really don't need to.

#4 is incorrect as pointed out below. Volume control doesn't seem to be a problem.

OK, partial correction - a function of the headphones. My testing had 1 datapoint, a Sony wh-1000xm4 which doesn't do the automatic pausing/resume when you remove/put on the headphones.

Volume control is the same with my airpods

#1 is for me the most annoying. Have to go through settings to get to bluetooth as the shortcut pairing (holding down the TV button on the remove) didn't show the headphones.

OP, an added option to the above replies would be to insert a middleman component- a receiver or amplifier "box"- which will then give you the fuller compatibility to do all kinds of things not walled garden. In other words, think about the signals of video & audio like they are tangible entities. Once they escape the AppleTV and are inside of a receiver or amplifier, they are fully outside the walled garden and will be able to do anything within the capabilities of the device. Those signals are delivered to that device as full & complete as possible... just outside of Apple decision-making (for us) control.

At least one more option that this would open up is wired headphones, which would overcome all limitations & shortcomings of pinched-bandwidth Bluetooth while delivering the fullest quality of the source to your ears. For example, if you would like to listen to Apple Lossless audio to its fullest, there's not enough bandwidth to do that with bluetooth-based buds & phones. However, good old wired can deliver.

If the only thing you want to do is listen with buds, a receiver or amp would be overkill unless perhaps you already have one (if so, dig into it to see what it can do for you in this direction). However, especially a receiver as middleman between AppleTV and TV really opens up a LOT of ways to improve a watching & listening experience... which includes much more flexibility with various kinds/brands of headphones and buds, wired & wireless.

I’m using a 4K ATV with a Bose Bluetooth sound bar with no issues. Connects automatically when I turn the ATV on and volume / pause works great.

I have my Sony Bravia TV set up as the hub for all devices and connected via HDMI-ARC to a Sony soundbar. So all streaming/disc devices go through the Sony Bravia TV which sends the sound to the Sony soundbar. I have an ATV 4K 2017, but I also have a Fire TV Cube 2nd gen, a Roku Ultra, and a Panasonic Blu-Ray player connected. I agree, it is short-sighted to merely hookup the ATV 4K as though it was the sole streaming device. It is much better to let the TV and sound system handle the sound for all devices.
