Are Podcasts supposed to sync between iTunes and Podcasts app?

Are Podcasts supposed to sync between iTunes and Podcasts app? It seems that episodes are syncing in that when I delete an episode in iTunes, it deletes on the Podcasts app. However, when I listen to a Podcast on my iPhone, this status does not update in iTunes. Are they not supposed to be in totally in sync, and/or is there a way to make them so?
