Are ring tone iTunes purchases not saved?

I just bought a kickass sound fx ringtone for my phone. Then I figured, just like anything else be it movies or music, my purchase would be saved. I tried to download the same ring tone on my iPad mini and it showed I had to buy it again.

Are ring tones only a one time dealio? Can I really only download it once and then I have to pay if I want to buy it again?

They are 1 download only. You can back them up to your computer and re-use them, but you cannot download them multiple times like music/software.

Ringtones cannot be redownloaded, you need to back them up on iTunes or you will have to buy them again.

Not completely true, but it does require a little more work. If you contact iTunes support by email and reference the old purchase number you can have them post the download to your account again. The ringtones will be downloaded on any computers as well as the device that originally purchased them.
