So i need to pick up some new hard drives, and are the server grade drives worth the extra money? Newegg has the WD 500GB drive for $104, and i already have one of these and love it. The drive is quiet, runs cool, and has fast speeds. Then there is the RE2 drive, their enterprise grade, for $129. I leave my PC on 24/7, so would i be safer with these drives, or is it just not worth it for a standard PC. I do transfer large video files between drives fairly often, so i'm looking at ware and tare.

I think that you will be fine with the cheaper one. No matter how much you think you are taxing your hard drive it is nothing compared to what some enterprises do!

So what defines a hard drive as "server grade"?

I would just buy a relatively cheap, reliable brand, and every 5-10 years repeat the cycle with a new, bigger drive.
