I know everyone know about the SMC Firmware update for the fans already. But when I install the SMC Update. It is permanent? Even when you completely earase the Hard Drive? Think this is what all firmware update are like. Just checking if I should update this or not.

Yes, the SMC Firmware is a ..... Firmware 
... so it's resident in an EEPROM on the mother board, as the EFI is. No risk to loose your version when formatting
