Does anyone know?

Are the CPU chips used in the G5 Quad and the G5 Dual the same chip, just clocked differently? Is the same chip able to run at both 2.3 GHz and 2.5 GHz, depending on how it is clocked? Clearly the chips are not identical; the one used in the Quad has two 970MP cores on it; the one used in the Dual has only one core per chip. But... are the cores the same?

To be right to the point, could I use a G5 Dual CPU in a Quad? I am guessing the resulting Quad would actually be a 2.5 GHz Dual.

Just thinking about options as I embark on air cooling a Quad.

Thanks!

All Late '05 G5s are 970MPs; they have two G5 cores per processor.

The Dual Core G5s have a single processor card with a 970MP on it-- not to be confused with the two 970FX cards in Dual Processor G5s.

Sourcing two 2.3 GHz Dual Core processor cards and installing them into a Quad's logic board would result in a Quad 2.3 GHz system. I believe there are some members who have done this before.
