I read on the internet somewhere, and I can't remember where, that the current iphone models (8GB and 16GB versions) will only require a change in firmware version to enable them to work with a 3G network. If this is the case then at least I wouldn't be forced to upgrade my iphone to use 3G. Anybody have any insight about this or is this just wishful thinking?

Wow the same ? has been asked/stated at least 15 times, I guess the forum search is broke.
/report Forum search feature NOT working

As many will say, current iPhone does NOT have the 3g hardware in it at all.
So yes you will need to wait 3-6 months? to get a 3g model then 3 -6 months after that one is released they will release a 32 or 64 gig model with Nspeed wifi :p so just wait about 9 months maybe a year.
