I originally gasped when I saw the prices, but I'm looking at the surface book with performance base prices right now and the new MBP actually looks cheaper.

The new Surface Book with Performance Base, 256 GB SSD, 8GB ram, i7 is $2399. A similarly spec'd MBP is $2099.

Are Apple's prices really that out of whack or am I just missing something? (I haven't looked at similar Dell and Lenovo yet).

Lonovo P50

4K screen
Xeon E3-1505M v5 Processor (8MB Cache, up to 3.70GHz)
32GB(8x4) DDR4 2133MHz SoDIMM
512GB SSD PCIe-NVMe
NVIDIA Quadro M2000M 4GB
$2050

15 MacBook Pro

3K screen (but probably better than above despite less pixels)
i7-6820HQ upto 3.8 GHz
16GB of RAM
Radeon Pro 460 4GB RAM
512GB SSD
$3100

I'd say 50% more expensive that something more or less the same, arguably better in some regards, is "out of line".

Yeah, I know. I was referring to the price alone.

It is hard not to consider tablet mode since that THE key features that distinguishes the Surface book from other notebooks. Adding that feature probably added 30% to the cost and definitely forced a lot of design changes (lower powered CPU, lots of mechanical complication to detach, OS changes to detect and attach/detach, etc. ).

Yeah, I just looked at the Dell as well, as someone had suggested, same sort of result as the Lonovo.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do at this point.
