As time progresses I'm increasingly intrigued by the idea of making a desktop station from my Macbook Pro, and I love the concept of video and power all being handled by one USB-C cable.

I'm doing some research and unfortunately it looks like most USB-C displays are 27" and higher. This is okay, but I'd love something smaller around the 21.5" to 24" area. It looks like LG's 4K display fits this criteria, but it's also way fancier and way more expensive than I was hoping for.

Does anyone have anything to recommend for this purpose?

I wanted the same thing, couldn’t find anything and ended up ordering the LG 24” Ultrafine. The Mac integration, color replication, brightness, ability to plug in my iPad Pro, and a future laptop if need be were the selling points for me.

Another option would be to get a TB3 “dock”, and plug your display/peripherals into that - so it’s still one cable to the laptop for video/data/power.

This gives you a lot more choice of displays, and supports a lot more accessory devices due to the increased bandwidth of TB3 vs Plain USB-C

True, and that's an option, but to be honest outside of an external hard drive that'll be occasionally plugged in there isn't a whole lot that I'll need to have plugged in regularly.

Maybe I should just suck it up and pick up one of the adapters that both powers the computer and has a HDMI out.

There are hundreds of compatible displays. Any that connect via DisplayPort or HDMI Will work well.
