After getting a bunch of files off my external hard drive, I noticed a bunch of weird files in my folders that I did not create. Some of them are named with the name of other files in the folder except with ~$ replacing the first two letters, and others are named ~WRL followed by a bunch of numbers. I heard of something called "temporary files", and thought these might be it. So is it safe to delete these files? I don't want to lose any data...

Thank you.

Very carefully as he has suggested....There is normally no need to delete temp files as OSX runs scripts for you, but if you do want to clean up read the thread here:
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/372795/

There is also an app (still in BETA) called Onyx which I have been using from time to time, but once again...Be careful as you can trash your system if you don't take care.

Onyx can be downloaded free from:
http://topmacfreeware.com/onyx-2-2-7/

But take care with it and don't run anything you are unsure of...

Are these "temporary files"? What are temporary files? Is it safe to get rid of them? What do they do? What does their presence mean?
