they have a resolution of 320 by 240, which if doubled would give you 640 by 480, 1280 by 1024, so on and so fourth, so are they widescreen ?

Nope. For the iPod to become wide screen they`d have to change the aspect ratio to atleast 16:10. The current 320x240(and 640x480) are 4:3 ratio. 720x480 would qualify as a widescreen. Hopefully we`ll see this in the new 6G iPod.

BTW doubling 640x480 will result in1280x960.
