Whether it’s to switch, convert or transfer.

I’m with Telus here in Canada and when I got my 17PM from Apple I decided to stopped by and ask my carrier since I was in the mall.

I already knew from previous experience I can easily convert my physical SIM card to eSIM using the Telus app by simply entering my iPhone’s EID, which took 20 seconds to activate the eSIM.

Anyways, I asked two locations and both said I had to pay $20 plus taxes, even after asking can’t this be done through the app?

I wonder if they’re getting commission or trained to milk us for every nickel now that Apple has made eSIM standard up here.

No. I am with SimON here in Germany and switching to eSiM was for free.
I also can deactivate and re-use the eSIM to switch to a new device in my customer portal for free anytime.

I have recently done it when I did an AppleCare exchange of my 16 PM.

US AT&T, $25 in-store, free online. They can waive the SIM fee if I buy something else in-store (e.g. case, cables).

They do have to pay for rent, employees, etc. with the brick and mortar stores.

I'm sure they'll survive but it feels unnecessary when you're paying them monthly.

I guess you have no problem paying a Connection fee whenever you activate or upgrade? Up here it used to be free and next thing you know they started charging $25, $45 and now $80...

My point was they can easily inform they're customers that it can be done for free without charging them using the app.

T-Mobile USA customer here. If memory serves, the only time I paid for a SIM was when I first purchased a device (I think) and later when I switched to a device that required a smaller size SIM. In the intervening years I had to get a new SIM once or twice because the installed SIM failed and I didn't pay for the replacement SIM in any of those cases.

As far as eSIM, my experience so far is when I switched from a device with a physical SIM to a device with an eSIM. I did side-by-side device switch and the software did everything, including activating the eSIM and disabling the physical SIM. My bill was the same. No charge for the eSIM activation.
