Foldable iPhone is launching next year according to many sources and in true Apple style, they've let the competition iron out the major issues whilst Apple put their stamp on it. Rumors are suggesting they've all but fixed the crease issue in the middle.

Samsung's Z Fold 7 probably best shows how far the fold technology has come - thinner yet larger screen. The early foldable phones had quite a poor single screen experience (size was small) but now they've made the front screen bigger and better so it's not as compromising. I think most people will still use the single screen the most.

The things I will find exciting about the foldable book style iPhone is the huge screen once opened. I've always wanted an iPad but I've actually never had any use for it. The combination of my iPhone and my ultra thin laptop has always had me covered for work/entertainment when travelling. I've never quite needed an iPad and it cannot (yet) replace my laptop.

But the thought of getting an iPhone which opens up to an iPad like experience is a great. Another huge plus for Apple - they've got their iPad OS already and it works very well so they are pretty much set on the software side. Having proper multitasking options on an iPhone will be amazing.

My only reservations are (obviously) price and how much I'm going to use it. Coming up to $2000/£2000 is pretty expensive - it's a steep price to pay. I don't mind too much if I am actually going to use it but that's the other thing I'm wondering, how much am I actually going to use it. Most of my use right now is things like whatsapp and Youtube - not sure how much I will use for the opened version. Or it could be one of those where once I get it, I learn to start using the device fully and then wouldn't want to not have it.

How excited are you about this? Will you be getting it? What type of uses are you looking forward to the most?

As someone who carries both an iPhone mini and an iPad mini everywhere I go, and do 90% of everything on the iPad mini, this is my dream come true. I look at it as an iPad mini that can fit in my pocket and make phone calls, rather than a phone that could sometimes be used as an iPad mini on occasion.

Nice. What sort of things do you use your iPad for?

Zero interest in a folding phone, whether flip or book style - though the flip style would be what I’d get if I was. Having used the latest Samsung and Oppo folds, I still can’t stand the displays and the crease. Completely off putting for me. I’m glad Apple will finally release a folding device and have confidence it will be a great device, it’s just not for me.

I’ve been waiting for a folding iPhone since the debut of the galaxy fold. I will be pre-ordering it. I’m also even more excited knowing that it will most likely be a very short and wide device. Should be perfect to use both opened and closed.

First edition of a majer release and completely new product is always the testing ground, and we are the guinea pigs to test it out for Apple to refine it further, don’t get me wrong, Apple will make it better than others have, but I think waiting for the next addition is the smartest move for me at least.

Also to add, I have always been interested of the idea of folding phones, so as much as I am looking forward to it, I will have to hold on to the 2nd release of it.

If it has:
  • No seam in the display
  • FaceID (weird rumors here)
I’ll consider it.

This. That said, I don't think I'll be willing to fork out $1800+ for one. Durability of the hinge area is also a concern.

Although we haven't seen it - we know Apple are the masters of waiting for the right time to release a product that works well. It's cheap enough and profitable enough for them to release the foldable phone after their competitors have done the hard work or ironing out the initial issues with build quality.

An iPad that's always with me is very exciting.

Not if it has a plastic screen that gets wrecked by finger nails or bits of dust.

You know…like every other folding phone.

Has Apple solved folding glass?

I’m not spending ~2000 on something so fragile. I’d rather a 7.1-7.3” Pro Max.

No thank you, I have absolutely zero interest in a foldable iPhone right now. Could that sentiment change in the future? Small chance, why not, but only after all the speculation and conjecture give way to something real and definitive.

I’ve said it before in other threads about an iPhone foldable, but I do not believe that the capability is there to completely remove the crease on a foldable display.

Until that capability exists, I wouldn’t even consider it.

Heck, the crease is such a deal breaker for me, I wouldn’t even buy a foldable if it was offered for less money than a standard base iPhone.

I have zero interest in a folding phone. A folding iPad (14” or above etc) would be far more interesting/useful to me, and even then I don’t want one until the visibility of the crease and durability have been removed as issues.

I don't know where you got the "$1800-$2000" from. Every single leak has said $2000 is the absolute minimum and it will likely start even above that. $1800 is just copium. Even Samsung fold starts at $2000 and iPhones oftentimes are more expensive than Samsung phones.
