it popped up when I tried to like a post a couple of days ago. I think it may be a setting in certain people's profile.

I got this prompt once when I was haphazardly checking out macrumors on my iPhone. I couldn't replicate it and haven't had it happen again.

If JavaScript is disabled, then you'll get prompted with that confirmation.

Make sure JavaScript is enabled for the site.

It's also possible that the JavaScript that should be loaded for a page didn't load for some reason (server error), and the result is the default non-JS'ish action for the Like button. If the problem occurs only sporadically, this might be the reason.

You can also tell whether JS is enabled or not by looking at the time-stamp on posts in this thread. If they show a complete date and time, rather than something like "18 minutes ago", then JS is probably disabled.

I turn mine on / off under Safari's "Develop" menu. There are many other ways, including with browser plugins.

Bingo! I get this with JS disabled. Is this what you are seeing @Mac'nCheese?

Unfortunately the site used to have a feature for likes and dislikes or whatever the terms were called. Potentially a true measure of the favorability of a post. Now it just has Likes. Another indicator of how the site has gone downhill. It could be a limitation of the platform the forums switched to, which obviously has many other benefits, but it also renders the Like tool utterly irrelevant.

There are a few discussions about that, along with various reasons and approaches that were involved, that have come up in the past, like the one at https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/the-downvote-button.1545900/ and a more involved older one at https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/can-we-please-remove-the-vote-buttons.1153058/.

I didn't realize this was what @Mac'nCheese was referring to. I thought it was a general malaise about Macrumors having a like system.

When I saw the thread title, I thought it was going to be just a reminder about how a like vote is not anonymous, i.e. "do you want to be associated to the views of this person whose post you upvoted?"

[Answer: depends who's counting the votes and implying they mean anything past face value of an upvote. ]
